Do you have the traits needed to be a successful small business owner?

There are a lot of important attributes small business owners have in common. It’s a subject that provokes a lot of opinions, but there are some qualities that a successful entrepreneur should have no matter what.

Curious if you’ve got these important characteristics of an entrepreneur? Keep reading for a breakdown of what it takes to be a successful small business owner.

    1. Determination to make your business a reality

It takes a lot of work to transform a dream into a business.. You’ll need plenty of tenacity to shrug off all the setbacks, persistence to endure the inevitable bumps in the road, and drive to overcome unforeseen hurdles. But, it will be worth it in the end.

    2. Courage to take on risks

You’ve got to be happy to be the rainmaker, because no one else is going to build your dream for you.

Successful small business owners have the courage to start something out of nothing. You can’t let fear keep you from taking on the types of risks that will actually help your business to grow. And, running a small business isn’t just about taking risks, it’s also about managing them.

Making sure your business is protected with the right small business insurance is one way to prevent curveballs from disrupting your journey.

    3. Passion for what you do

This is what will help get you out of bed each morning and reassure you that the risks are worth taking.

Small business owners need to have a deep passion for what they do. Successful entrepreneurs are usually driven by something more personal than making money and that’s what sets their small business apart from the competition.

3.Creativity to respond to customers’ needs

Part of being a successful small business owner is having the ability to think outside of the box. Have the foresight to ask yourself what the ‘why’ is of your business. What’s the underlying mission and why is what you’re doing better than the competition?

And in the early days you’re going to need to make a splash without having much money. That will take imagination. You’ll want to think of ways to fulfill your customers’ needs before they’ve even thought of them.

    4. Patience when it comes to growth

You can’t be in a rush to build your business. If you take shortcuts, it will often take you longer to build a successful business and one you’re proud of.

    5. Good delegation skills

Many people start a small business because they want to be their own boss. There’s nothing wrong with that, but don’t let a do-it-yourself attitude turn into a belief that you have to run every aspect of the business all the time.

You’ll get burnt out quickly and could wind up back as an employee for someone else. You are better off hiring people more clever than you to nurture them and give them the space to help develop the business.

At Hiscox, we know what it’s like to have passion for what you want to achieve. We’re passionate about creating a new kind of insurer: One that puts you at the center of all that we do and one who will help you to fulfill your dream of creating a business you’re proud of.

Check out even more top characteristics of an entrepreneur to get a snapshot of what it takes to venture out on your own and start your own small business.
